| What is Hirudin?
Hirudin is the most significant active constituents, is extracted from leech and its salivary glands, and is a kind of small molecule protein (polypeptide) which comprised of 65-66 amino acid. Hirudin has strong inhibition of thrombin, is by far the strongest thrombin inhibitor. It can be used for human's four system: 1) Blood circulation system, including varicosity, liver cirrhosis, hypertension, hyperglycemia and thrombosis, etc. 2) Genitourinary system, infertility, chronic nephritis, diabetes, etc. 3) Visual system, conjunctivitis and cataract, hirudin can prevent intraocular hyperplastic lesions. 4) Respiratory system: asthma. |
| Function of Hirudin Hirudin is a naturally occurring peptide in the salivary glands of medicinal leeches (Hirudo medicinalis) that has a blood anticoagulant property. This is fundamental for the leeches' alimentary habit of hematophagy, since it keeps the blood flowing after the initial phlebotomy performed by the worm on the host's skin. |
